Greetings! I'm sorry for the late post this week -- I was having technical difficulties with the website! This week we are wrapping up our review of percents (many students needed extra practice since we ended Module 4) and we are continuing with Module 5 lessons on Probability. We have used many experiments involving cubes in a bag, flipping cups, coins and rolling a die to simulate experimental probabilities. We have also started talking about how experimental probabilities (what you actually get) can differ from theoretical probabilities (what you think you will get). We've used the example of tossing a coin 10 times to illustrate the difference between the two. If you toss a coin, you may get 8 heads and 2 tails. Your experimental probability of getting a heads is 8/10, or 80%. In theory though you would have expected it to be 5/10, or 50%. This is what's called a Theoretical Probability.
This week we will finish up lessons 7, 8 and 12 and will be looking at our next module test most likely early next week. We will also be having a notebook quiz later this week. Be sure to check out the updated INB Pictures. Please note the additions that were made on pages 80, 81 and 87. Pages 80 and 81 were only handed out in Class 2. Here is a link for additional review on Tree Diagrams. Students learned about these in lessons 6 & 7. They are a helpful tool to organize outcomes and accurately calculate probabilities. Students should continue to practice using the Smarter Balanced website. We will be testing the first 2 weeks in May (one session is the CAT portion and the other is the PT portion). Here is the link for the practice tests, calculator and answer keys (scoring rubric). Practicing for just 10-15 min per night can make a huge difference in reducing a student's anxiety and allowing them to show what they know when test day comes. Upcoming Events: Mar 29 - PCA Pride Day Apr 1 - 5 - Book Fair Next week also begins state testing for ELA. Please ensure your student is getting plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast to be able to do their best! Have a great week! Comments are closed.
