What an interesting week we had last week with the two early dismissals and no school on Thursday! We will do our best not to fall too far behind by hopefully making up some ground this week. Last week most classes finished Lesson 3, Comparing Quantities with Percent. In this lesson, students had to pay close attention to the way the question was phrased in order to understand which number represented the part and which number represented the whole.
Example 1: If there are 750 students in 7th grade and 625 students in 8th grade, what percent is the 7th grade class compared to the 8th grade class? 750/625 = 1.2 = 120% Example 2: If there are 750 students in 7th grade and 625 students in 8th grade, what percent is the 8th grade class compared to the 7th grade class? 625/750 = 0.83 = 83% **Whatever you are comparing something to is the WHOLE** Other examples involved age. Students wrote down their age and the age of one of their siblings. They then calculated what percent their age is compared to their siblings and vice versa. This week we will cover percent increase and decrease, markup and markdown, percent error and simple interest. Here are some videos/helpful links regarding part, percent and whole. Example video using proportions to solve part, percent, whole Example video using equation and proportions to solve part, percent, whole Practice worksheets (with ans key) Students will be having a quiz most likely on Tuesday covering conversions and identifying part and whole in order to correctly calculate a percent. Here is the Quizizz code for this week...984262. Topic is converting percents, decimals and fractions. Reminder - this Friday, 2/8 is a N.U.T. Day (cost $2)! Have a great week! Comments are closed.
